Your first night
Your first night, step by step
Most people try a class before they join. Here is what that night looks like.
- 01Step 1
Step 1: Pick a class
Choose a fundamentals class, in the gi or without it, on the booking page. Fundamentals classes are for people on their first night, and nobody there has trained for long.
Gi fundamentals on Monday and Friday
No-gi fundamentals on Wednesday
- 02Step 2
Step 2: Come as you are
Wear a plain t-shirt and shorts or loose pants. We lend a uniform for gi classes, and you leave your shoes at the door. Nails short, jewelry off, hair tied back.
A plain t-shirt and shorts is enough
A uniform is lent for gi classes
- 03Step 3
Step 3: Learn, then roll or watch
After a bow and an easy warm-up, an instructor shows two moves and you drill them with a partner. You learn how to tap first, and a light roll at the end is yours to choose. Plenty of people watch their first night.
A tap or the word stop ends a drill
Questions answered at the front desk
What to wear
A plain t-shirt and shorts is enough
For no-gi, bring a t-shirt or rash guard and shorts without pockets or zippers. For the gi, we lend a uniform for your first classes and the front desk can tell you what to look for before you buy your own.
Bring
A plain t-shirt or rash guard
Shorts or loose pants, no pockets
A water bottle
Nothing on your feet on the mat

On the mat
Four habits every student shares
Jiu-jitsu is trained in close contact, so these four habits keep every class comfortable for everyone.
Clean uniform
Wash your uniform or training clothes after every class, and shower before you come if you can.
Short nails
Keep fingernails and toenails short, and take off rings, chains and earrings.
Shoes off the mat
Shoes stay at the door. Wear sandals to the bathroom and back.
Tap early
A tap or the word stop ends a drill at once. Tap early, and let go the moment your partner taps.
